To the U.S. President

Groaning noise is echoing in the sky above my house in the City of Machida in Metropolitan Tokyo, from early in the morning till late at night even on holidays.

This is not an ordinary matter.

Because of frequent touch-and-go exercises by U.S. aircraft from the U.S. aircraft carrier home-ported at Yokosuka Naval Base in Kanagawa Prefecture, my family members can hardly catch words with each other, TV voices, and even telephone calls.

Can such things happen in the capital of the U.S.A.?

Most of the 400,000 Machida citizens in Tokyo as well as 1.5 million people living under the circular flight course around the U.S. Atsugi Naval Air Station in Kanagawa.

In the Iraq War, the U.S. Forces in Japan have played a major role, with many bombs dropped by aircraft from U.S. carriers, one of which from Yokosuka.

Therefore, you are recommended to take urgent measures to give us back silent nights and days; learn that many Japanese people are reluctant to continue supporting the role of the USFJ.

Also, we can no longer support the use of the U.S. Yokosuka Naval Base in Kanagawa prefecture, the only homeport for the U.S. aircraft carrier outside the U.S. As citizens of the only Atomic-bombed country, we are opposed to the scheduled deployment of a nuclear-powered carrier to Yokosuka. Please discontinue home-porting at Yokosuka, the source of the unwelcome sound.

Now that 58 years have passed since the end of WWII, and in Asia only the Republic of Korea and Japan are maintaining military alliances with the U.S. The ROK government is calling for the Status of U.S. Forces in ROK Agreement to be reviewed, and the USFK to be reduced.

Perhaps it is unwise to continue regarding the Liberal Democratic Party-government, always a yes-man to you, only a legitimate government in Japan. Calls for review of the stationing of U.S. forces in Asia will increase in Japan, following similar moves in South Korea.

No one is convinced that terrorism can be eliminated by war. Please withdraw from Iraq as early as possible. Nearly sixty percent in an opinion survey expressed opposition to the planned the dispatch of SDF personnel to Iraq. (Asahi Shimbun, August 26, 2003)

We would not support either personnel dispatch of the SDF or the sharing the cost for the war and occupation in Iraq.

Prompt and concrete study of the matter is needed.

Wishing that this paper will be sent to sections concerned for further study. Thank you.
